Understanding Your Housing Rights as a Newcomer

schedule8 min read

The Basics

Regardless of immigration status, all tenants have the right to safe, habitable housing. Provincial and territorial residential tenancy acts govern the landlord-tenant relationship and cannot be waived by contract.

Lease Agreements

A written lease protects both parties. If a landlord does not provide a written lease, your tenancy is still governed by the applicable provincial act. Always request a copy of any agreement in writing.

Discrimination Protections

The Canadian Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on national or ethnic origin, race, religion, age, sex, and sexual orientation. Contact the Canadian Human Rights Commission if you believe you have been discriminated against.
