Quebec's rental market operates under the Civil Code with strong tenant protections. All leases use the official Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL) form, and Quebec law prohibits security deposits — landlords can only charge first month's rent.

Start your search 2–3 months before your move-in date. When applying, landlords may request proof of income — newcomers without Canadian work history can substitute bank statements or proof of government benefits showing 4–6 months of savings.

If rent prices seem unusually low, the landlord avoids in-person meetings, or they request cash-only payments, these are major red flags. Report suspected fraud to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
