Federal Tax Credits & Family Benefits

As a newcomer to Canada, you may qualify for federal benefits even before filing your first tax return. The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) provides monthly payments if you have children under 18 — permanent residents can apply immediately using Form RC151. The GST/HST credit is also available to all residents on low incomes and can be applied for without filing taxes using Form RC151.

Quebec Provincial Support Programs

Quebec offers several programs for newcomers with low incomes: the Shelter Allowance Program (Allocation-logement) provides up to $170/month if rent exceeds 30% of household income; the Social Assistance Program (aide sociale) offers monthly support to individuals with no or very low income. Many organizations across Quebec provide free settlement services, and French language training comes with financial assistance of $200+ per week.

Don't Delay Applications

Most federal and provincial benefits don't auto-enroll — you must actively apply. Applying within your first months in Canada ensures you receive back-dated benefits and don't miss critical support windows. Learn more at Canada.ca
